Richmond Valley Mayor Col Sullivan, Federal member for Page, Janelle Saffin and Minister for Defence Materiel & Science, Greg Combet cut the ribbon to officially open the Casino CBD upgrade.
The events marked the official opening of the revitalised Casino CBD while also kicking off work on the new Casino Community and Cultural Centre. Ms Saffin, representing Maxine McKew, Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Development and Local Government, said the Australian Government provided a total of $5 million to the Richmond Valley Council for the two important election commitments. “It’s wonderful to see the $2 million Casino CBD revitalisation completed because it is such a boost for local business and the whole community. There is better pedestrian access and the wider footpaths, trees and street furniture make it a pleasure to go shopping here and there is also provision for outdoor entertainment and recreation facilities. “The new $3 million Casino Community and Cultural Centre will bring community service organisations such as Red Cross and Casino Respite Service into the one location close to the CBD and public transport, providing better access for the community,” Ms Saffin. “These improvements and upgrades in Casino form part of the Australian Government’s commitment to provide $176 million over four years under the Better Regions program,” Ms Saffin said. Mr Combet said that the projects provided a direct economic boost to the Casino community. “Importantly, during construction, the CBD enhancement created four local jobs and the Community and Cultural Centre is expected to create another forty.” “While we can and do fund big infrastructure projects like motorways that are needed to maintain our nation’s prosperity, it is local facilities like these that support local communities, families and individuals,” Mr Combet said.
