Local high schools could lose funding for their Trade Training Centres under a Coalition plan to cut $230 million from the program, Member for Page, Janelle Saffin MP said today. Ms Saffin said the Coalition would rip funding away from local high schools which have already been promised a Trade Training Centre. Ms Saffin said the Federal Parliament was told this week that the Coalition would claw-back $230 million already committed to high schools to build Trade Training Centres over the next two years. “That means local high schools that have already been promised access to a Trade Training Centre could miss out,” Ms Saffin said. Ms Saffin said that two local high schools, Kadina High School and Kyogle High School, had been promised Trade Training Centres worth $7.5 million and $4.5 million respectively. Lismore High School, Richmond River High School and Wilson Park School could also miss out, having pooled $4.5 million in funding to construct the shared facility at Kadina High School. Bonalbo Central School and Casino High School were also at risk of losing access to trade training, having pooled $3 million in funding to construct the joint Trade Training Centre at Kyogle High School. “These schools could now have their Trade Training Centres taken away thanks to Tony Abbott’s extreme plan to scrap funding for trades training in local high schools,” Ms Saffin said. “Worse still, because the Opposition has also axed the entire trades training program, no other local high school will ever get access to a Trade Training Centre if Tony Abbott is elected Prime Minister. “I call on the Coalition candidate, Mr Hogan, to state on the record whether he supports Tony Abbott’s plan to axe trades funding promised to our local high schools. “They need to come clean and explain which of our local high schools will no longer have access to Trade Training Centres if Tony Abbott and the Coalition are elected.” 28 May, 2010
