Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Maxine McKew and the Member for Page Janelle Saffin have welcomed today’s official opening of the new $4.14 million Raymond Laurie Sports Centre in Yamba. Janelle Saffin said she was delighted to be able to deliver the Centre, which was a commitment she made to the people of Yamba at the last election. “The old cliché that sport is the winner is certainly true today,” Ms Saffin said. “And so is our local area.” “Sporting and community groups now have two state competition standard basketball and netball courts, five multi-function rooms, and room to seat up to 750 spectators.” “Over 200 people including many local tradesmen worked on the project, and 80 per cent of materials were sourced locally.” The Rudd Government provided $2 million to the Clarence Valley Council for the Centre. Ms McKew praised the local community for getting behind the project. “The wide range of sporting and community groups represented shows this project is true to the name of the Ngayundi Yamba sporting complex,” said Ms McKew. “Ngayundi means ‘it’s all of ours’ in the local Yaegl Aboriginal language.” “The Centre is a testament to what can be achieved when the Federal Government gets behind local government and local communities, as we have with thousands of community infrastructure projects across Australia.” The Raymond Laurie Sports Centre was funded under the Rudd Government’s Better Regions Program which is providing $176 million to regional Australia over four years to fulfil election commitments.
